Leadership Styles Application
NURS FPX 5007 Assessment 1 Leadership Styles Application
Implementing various leadership styles is one of the most important components of efficient leadership. The ability to adjust one’s strategy based on the specifics of one’s team and environment is essential for any leader. Leaders who want to guide their teams to success must have a firm grasp of the fundamental principles of various leadership styles and an appreciation of their respective drawbacks and benefits (IMD, 2022).
Major Tenets of Leadership Styles Application
NURS FPX 5007 Assessment 1 Leadership Styles Application
Based on the information provided in the scenario, three leadership styles that may be applicable are
Transformational Leadership
This leading method encourages and praises employees for exceeding the call of duty. Leaders who can transform their teams are visionaries who impart that vision to their followers (Collins et al., 2019). They stress the importance of skill development and actively motivate their followers to explore new possibilities. Transformational leadership will help Marty to change her behavior toward her job and become more serious about her work routine. She comes to work late, goes home early, makes excuses, and often takes leave from the hospital. She does not cooperate with her colleagues despite most of them helping her. To help Marty change her attitude, a transformational leader might provide her with the resources and direction she needs to reach her full potential by effectively collaborating with others.
Servant Leadership

In this approach, the leader takes a backseat to their followers’ needs and encourages them to realize their potential. Servant leaders aim to foster mutual respect and cooperation in the workplace (Ma et al., 2021). They put the group’s requirements before their own. A servant leader would recognize Marty’s needs as a nurse and work to meet them while motivating her to do her best.
Situational Leadership

This approach emphasizes tailoring one’s leadership style to the specific requirements of one’s followers and the circumstances currently at hand. Leaders who are situational experts can assess the group’s requirements and adjust their approach accordingly. They help their team develop competence and self-assurance by guiding, directing, and backing them up when required (Peddle et al., 2019). A situational leader would put in the effort to learn about Marty’s unique needs and circumstances and then modify their method of leadership accordingly.
Effectiveness of Leadership Application

The current circumstances present Marty’s supervisor and the other team members with a difficult and multifaceted set of obstacles. Concerns have been raised about the care provided to patients and the safety of the workplace due to Marty’s habit of sleeping while on the job, the insufficient performance of her responsibilities, and creating an unpleasant atmosphere. Therefore, it is crucial to adopt a leadership style suitable for the circumstances.
Leaders who use transformational leadership to motivate and inspire their teams to reach their full potential may succeed here (Farahnak et al., 2019). Marty would benefit from a transformational leader who would help her see her worth, give her authority, and encourage her to do better. If Marty’s leader had laid out the goals and objectives for the team, given her the tools she needed to succeed, and pushed her to think outside the box, she would be more likely to rise to the challenge. Marty’s self-esteem can grow, and her motivation can increase if her leader gives her consistent feedback and praise. A transformational leader could enhance Marty’s performance by encouraging her to assume responsibility for her position and giving her the resources and direction she needs.
The principles of servant leadership, which include prioritizing the requirements of others and encouraging an atmosphere of mutual support and cooperation, may also prove useful here (Perkins & Repper, 2020). A servant leader might try to put themselves in Marty’s shoes, learn about his caregiving duties, and then work to make the workplace more accommodating for her. The leader can encourage Marty to give her best work by prioritizing her needs and providing an atmosphere that allows her to flourish professionally. A leader can help alleviate aggression and stress by fostering an environment where employees work together and treat each person with respect and dignity (Clark, 2019).

Since situational leadership highlights adapting one’s approach to leading to the specific characteristics of each follower and the circumstances at hand, it may prove useful in this scenario (Hunt & Fedynich, 2019). A situational leader would be able to recognize Marty’s specific challenges and develop a plan to help her meet that head-on. In this way, the leader could supply her with the tools and instructions she needed to carry out her responsibilities and stand by her side whenever she ran into trouble. A situational leader would be able to make Marty feel appreciated and endorsed so that she could do a good job by being adaptable and responding to the specific requirements of the situation.
Marty and her coworkers are in a tough spot, and the right leadership style is crucial for getting them through this situation. A leader can assist Marty in overcoming the obstacles she faces and enhancing the patient care she provides by motivating and inspiring her to reach her maximum potential, emphasizing her requirements, establishing a favorable work environment, and trying to adapt to the requirements of the scenario.
Positive and Negative Implications of Applying Leadership Style
Transformational Leadership
NURS FPX 5007 Assessment 1 Leadership Styles Application
Positive Implication
This situation can benefit Marty and her coworkers with transformational leadership. A transformational leader is someone who, by setting a clear goal and direction, motivates Marty and her coworkers to work together to achieve that goal. As a result, Marty may be more inspired to work harder, and her coworkers may feel more compelled to help out when they can. Therefore, the chances of improving patient outcomes, decreasing workplace aggression, and raising employee satisfaction are all boosted.
Negative Implication
Conversely, it’s possible that Marty’s situation isn’t well-suited to a transformational leader’s approach. Marty’s manager might not have the time or energy to provide the counseling, coaching, and necessary training for her to adopt this style of leadership. A study by Hunt & Fedynich (2019) also highlighted these challenges associated with transformational leadership. On the other hand, not all employees will respond well to a transformational leader, and those may experience burnout or a decrease in work satisfaction if they cannot meet their boss’s lofty standards (Khan et al., 2020).
Situational Leadership
NURS FPX 5007 Assessment 1 Leadership Styles Application
Positive Implication
Situational leadership might assist Marty’s supervisor in modifying their leadership strategy according to her situation and specific needs and requirements, enhancing her performance and engagement. This leadership strategy emphasizes adaptability and flexibility, which might assist the supervisor in responding to the varying challenges and needs that arise as Marty’s personal situation evolves. Marty can emphasize her work performance improvement once she fully understands what is expected. This leadership strategy can also encourage her colleagues to back her up and help her fulfill the duties of her position without judgment.
Negative Implication
Applying situational leadership might be laborious, ineffective, and require a substantial investment of resources, which might be challenging for the supervisor to stabile with other tasks. Without a clear understanding of applying situational leadership, the supervisor may fight to regulate the best suitable leadership style to use with Marty. This could lead to misunderstanding, frustration, prevention, and varying leadership practices.
Servant Leadership
NURS FPX 5007 Assessment 1 Leadership Styles Application
Positive Implication
Marty’s working relationship with her team may benefit from a servant leadership approach. This approach emphasizes hearing others out, empathizing with them, and working together, all of which can help Marty gain the respect and trust of her coworkers. Marty’s supervisor has the power to foster a more positive work environment by concentrating on the requirements of her employees, which will hopefully lead to reduced tension and greater satisfaction in the workplace. According to SpearsCenter, (n.d.). a servant leader serves to improve the performances of his employees.
Negative Implication
However, reaching the desired results for the hospital may not be possible with a servant leadership approach. This kind of leadership may be too concerned with satisfying workers’ expectations rather than achieving the hospital’s goals. However, the collaborative method may take longer to produce results, which might not be practicable in a medical situation where every minute matters. There’s also the risk that workers will abuse the generous policies and perform less well.
Conclusion
NURS FPX 5007 Assessment 1 Leadership Styles Application
In conclusion, the three types of leadership, transformational, servant, and transactional, could be useful in addressing the managerial challenge posed by the scenario involving Marty, the sleeping nurse. Each approach, however, has advantages and disadvantages that vary depending on the circumstances. Leaders must cautiously examine the circumstances and their team to figure out which style is best and how to deal with the possible effects of their style.
