- Being a student of nursing (at the master level), think about the impact of your specialization and practicum courses on your professional identity. How do you want to develop your career in the future?
The specialization and practicum classes have significantly influenced my professional identity as they have strengthened the ethical basis of the nursing field and broadened my leadership potential. Nursing values and ethics helped me to deepen my personal dedication to integrity, advocacy, and compassionate practice. The practicum experiences, specifically the activities in patient-centered care and quality improvement initiatives, provided me with the opportunity to use theory in practice by enabling patient empowerment and collaboration in the team, as well as responding to the safety barriers within organizations.
These experiences made me realize that I have a desire to improve the well-being of nurses and patient outcomes via evidence-based leadership. My future aspirations involve attending an advanced practice or emergency or acute care position, with the focus on the implementation of the nurse-led innovations to minimize burnout and improve cultural responsiveness. Professional self in nursing has been demonstrated to occur through the combination of ethical reasoning, reflection and clinical experiences (Marold et al., 2025). Also, a high level of professional identity leads to a higher level of patient safety, interaction between professions, and the growth of nursing leadership (Mbalinda et al., 2024). In the long run, I would like to be involved in policy-making and research on equity in the provision of care and the development of sustainable workforce models.

- What is the way nurses should incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion as the essential aspects of their professional identity?
By applying cultural humility, social justice and advocacy in daily practice, nurses incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). DEI-focused professional identity entails self-reflection as a way of identifying implicit bias and structural inequities that shape patient care. Nurses can foster fair access by differentiating communication, providing an interpreter service, and providing culturally congruent care. Integration is also applied to the area of leadership in the workplace where nurses can help in the development of inclusive policies, mentoring underrepresented peers, and promoting equitable staffing and opportunities. Taking DEI as a part of professional identity is correlated with an ethical requirement of nursing to honor the dignity of humans and decrease disparities (Lane et al., 2024). Health equity education, anti-bias training, and community collaboration strengthen nurses in supporting inclusiveness on the various levels of their practice (Dowling et al., 2021). Finally, by adopting DEI, nurses enhance the level of trust and lead by example to ensure their colleagues are also responsible.

- Consider a patient-centered care experience where you used diversity, equity and inclusion principles. What do you do to empower patients to make their health choices during this experience?
The patient worked in my practicum experience with a Spanish speaking patient in the Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital where language barriers and limiting policies on childbirth added to the distress. I teamed up with the interpreter services to ensure that the wishes of the patient are apparent and honored by employing the principles of DEI. I also empowered her to make the joint decision making her discuss the choices using comprehensible language and discussing safety and comfort issues with her. Research shows that the culturally competent communication methods are having a significant impact on the trust, compliance and patient satisfaction with care obtained (Cipta et al., 2024).
In addition to that, interpreter services and inclusive decision-making strategies would reduce health disparities, which would help them to access safe and patient-centered care equally (Cipta et al., 2024). I used motivational interviewing skills that helped her to set self-goals and direct her independent decisions about course of care according to her values. This experience caused the necessity to take into account the linguistic and cultural needs to empower patients to make decisions. It enhanced patient satisfaction and results as it assisted the patient to become an active participant in her care through the reduction of power imbalances and the establishment of trust.

- How can you inspire colleagues to uphold racial and social justice efforts and serve as professional role models in addressing implicit bias at work?
In order to promote racial and social justice with colleagues one must show how to make inclusive decisions, initiate open dialogues and offer safe places where people can reflect on them. In this case, a nurse leader can demonstrate professional accountability by recognizing the existence of biases in him and seeking to learn through the various perspectives. Encouraging individuals towards cultural competency and implicit bias training encourage interpersonal growth. Moreover, the fact that DEI is implemented into quality enhancement programs and policy promotion indicates that it can be applied to the safety of patients and their well-being as well as to the well-being of staff.
To become a role model means to promote the fairness of treatment all the time, mentor the employees who are under-served, and to define the principles of the just culture by offering the equal measure of responsibility and fairness. It has been shown that the healthcare units with a high inclusivity and equity levels recorded higher numbers of collaboration, lower burnout, and better patient outcomes (Cipta et al., 2024). Furthermore, implicit bias training as a structured training has been found to increase awareness and promote changes in behavior over time in the nursing practice (Thompson et al., 2025). By referring to the section of the evidence that inclusive workplaces boost performance, I will be able to persuade others to automate their practices in order to conform to equity-based desires. Such worker builds a culture of belongingness, which does not only value diversity but defends it.

- What topics interest you for your MSN capstone project? Reflect on opportunities you encountered during your specialization courses. Consider your passions within nursing and any specific issues or challenges you’d like to address.
The most interesting subject to me in my MSN capstone project is to develop an evidence based intervention that can be implemented to avert nurse burnout in emergency and acute care hospitals. The specialization courses and practicum experiences showed that the problem of stress and staffing is a highly-rooted issue that impairs the welfare of employees, as well as, patient safety. Other initiatives, such as the creation of the Zen room, the design of debrief, and the presentation of mindfulness applications, contributed to gaining insight into the effective solutions to become more resilient and be more effective.
I am also interested in the evaluation of interventions that include the combination of environmental interventions and digital stress-reduction tools, in particular. The second point of interest is the enhancement of culturally responsive communication in patient care, especially within the language-diverse population. It is demonstrated that interventions that tend to improve nurse well-being at the workplace can be highly effective to reduce turnover rates and raise patient care outcomes (Cohen et al., 2023). Also, culturally responsive care models are proved to reduce health disparities and improve trust between the healthcare practitioner and the diverse patient groups (Cohen et al., 2023). Capstone project would allow me to combine leadership, DEI, and quality improvement abilities and would result in sustainable workforce practices that would be helpful to nurses and patients alike.
