The use of technology in nursing education is helping healthcare professionals in tackling challenges over the years. Nursing education is evolving rapidly due to associated changes like the development of diseases, changing healthcare needs, advancements in technology, and patient concerns. Technology and virtual-based practices need continuous updates. It improves nurses’ problem-solving and leadership skills and enhances medicine delivery potential (Contreras et al., 2020).

The Use of Current Technology by the Nurses

The Johns Hopkins University Baltimore is one of the oldest and most prestigious research universities in the United States. It offers various nursing diplomas, associate degrees, and affiliated medical research programs.

Nurses using educational technology within a specific setting

John Hopkin university uses Artificial Intelligence (AI ) technology to create customized learning programs for nurses. It helps nurses to focus on the areas where they have a personal interest. Meanwhile, AI technology is being used to create intelligent tutoring systems that can provide personalized feedback to nurses (Robert, 2019)

Educational Technology in Nursing Education

Moreover, AI technology is also used to improve the decision-making of nurses, AI-generated virtual patients are being used for clinical experimentation, and simulation tools are used to teach nurses about different medical procedures. There are associated uncertainties with the AI models, the machine learning process of AI technology takes a lot of time to perform authentically. During the process of machine learning, there are always chances of unexpected results and uncertain decision makings (Randhawa et al., 2019).  In the future nurses from John Hopkin University will be able to perform better with improved learning processes and the technology(AI) will also improve the outcomes in the health of patients as well.

Comparison of the Current State with Desired State

AI technologies, such as machine learning  could potentially be used to assist with tasks such as grading assignments, providing personalized feedback to students, and identifying areas where students may need additional support. AI could also be used to create interactive learning materials and simulations, which could help students to better understand complex concepts and develop practical skills.

Current State

The current state of the use of AI is helpful but it has a problem of uncertainty to explain the complex cases. Nurses have several issues and proper AI based education is not available.

Desired State

The desired state of nursing education aims to achieve  maximum output in their clinical practices by incorporating AI  in their education. The nurses will be fully educated regarding the AI techniques and tools that will enhance their clinical skills to improve patient care and safety.

One desired application of AI in nursing education is the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies to create immersive learning experiences  that is currently lacking in the nursing education (Pottle, 2019). AR could also be used to provide students with real-time information and guidance as they perform tasks, such as administering medications or performing assessments (Shorey, 2019)

The current state is dependant on the traditional teaching methods and the desired state requirement is to replace the traditional methods by AI based tools and techniques. It should also be recognized that the use of AI in education may not be suitable for all students, and accommodations may need to be made in current nursing education system for those who may not benefit from or have difficulty interacting with AI-powered learning materials (Buchanan et al., 2021)

Comparison of Desired and Current State

To evaluate the internal and external factors that can impact the use of AI in nurses’ learning I am using SWOT analysis.

NURS FPX 6109 Assessment 1 Vila Health: Educational Technology Needs Assessment

Strengths

  • Due to limitation in access of educational resources in the current state, the desired state is aiming to strengthen the nursing education system by providing access to a wide range of educational resources, such as simulations and virtual patient cases, that can enhance learning and allow students to practice skills in a safe environment.

Weaknesses

  • Even though the desired state is making interactions and  decision-making  practices easier for them but still they may struggle to adapt to learning with AI, especially if they are not familiar with technology or prefer more traditional forms of education.

Opportunities

  • The current state has limited opportunities towards growth and learning but the desired state  can help to increase the accessibility of nursing education, making it possible for students to learn from anywhere with an internet connection.

Threats

Current state  may have concerns about the accuracy and reliability of AI-based nursing education programs due to limited access to AI technology but the desired state is fulfilling this gap by the utilization of remote services provided by nurses educated with AI tools.

Assessment of Metrics

There are several metrics that could be used to determine the benefits of AI in the learning of nursing students. These may include:

Improved test scores

One way to measure the benefits of AI in nursing education is to track changes in test scores before and after the implementation of AI-based learning tools. This could include both formative assessments (such as quizzes and practice tests) as well as exams and certification tests.

Increased retention and recall of information

AI-based learning tools can be designed to help nursing students retain and recall information more effectively.

Greater engagement, Fast Learning, and Motivation

AI-based learning tools can be designed to be more interactive and engaging than traditional methods, which may lead to increased motivation and engagement among nursing students. This can be measured through surveys or focus groups, or through tracking measures such as attendance and participation. Furthermore, AI-based learning tools can be designed to adapt to the needs and abilities of nursing students, potentially leading to faster learning.

Improved clinical skills

AI-based learning tools can be used to simulate clinical scenarios, allowing students to practice and develop their skills in a safe, controlled environment. This can be measured through assessments of clinical performance or through evaluations by clinical instructors.

Recommendation

NURS FPX 6109 Assessment 1 Vila Health: Educational Technology Needs Assessment

There is evidence to suggest that AI-based learning tools can be effective in the learning of nursing students. To enhance the efficacy of AI in the learning of nursing students, there are a few recommendations to consider:

  • Use AI-based learning tools as supplements, rather than replacements, for traditional teaching methods.
  • While AI-based learning tools can be effective, they should not be used as the sole method of teaching. Instead, they should be used as supplements to traditional teaching methods, such as lectures and hands-on practice.
  • One of the benefits of AI-based learning tools is their ability to adapt to the needs and abilities of individual students. To maximize their effectiveness, it is important to ensure that these tools are personalized to the needs of each student
  • To determine the efficacy of AI-based learning tools, it is important to track and monitor their effectiveness. This could include tracking changes in test scores and retention, as well as collecting feedback from students and instructors.
  • To ensure that they are effective, it is important to keep up with these developments and make updates as needed. To ensure that AI-based learning tools are used effectively, it is important to provide training and support to nurses on how to use these tools in their classroom and clinical practices in their professional career.

Alignment of New Technology with the Mission of Organization

NURS FPX 6109 Assessment 1 Vila Health: Educational Technology Needs Assessment

The strategic mission of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore includes a commitment to advancing knowledge and providing students with a world-class education. AI technology can play a role in this mission by supporting and enhancing the learning of nursing students at the university (Amann et al., 2020).

One way that AI technology can support the strategic mission of Johns Hopkins University is by providing personalized and adaptive learning experiences for nursing students. AI-based learning tools can analyze student data and adapt to the needs and abilities of each individual student, providing a more tailored learning experience. This can help students learn more effectively and efficiently, potentially leading to improved test scores and retention of information.

Another way that AI technology can support the strategic mission of Johns Hopkins University is by providing students with opportunities to practice and develop their clinical skills in a safe, controlled environment. AI-based learning tools can simulate clinical scenarios and allow students to practice their skills, improving their preparedness for real-world clinical situations. Overall, the use of AI technology in the education of nursing at Johns Hopkins University can help to advance knowledge and provide students with a world-class education, aligning with the university’s strategic mission (Gardner et al., 2018).

Conclusion

NURS FPX 6109 Assessment 1 Vila Health: Educational Technology Needs Assessment

The use of technology has also given optimal results in every field of life. Artificial Intelligence is as old as Information Technology (IT). AI has developed learning techniques and teaching modules and incredibly turned the mode of intelligence for students. Automatic processing and analysis of data will help nursing students secure better clinical practices and ensure patient care and safety.
