Presentation to Staff: Nursing Informatics
Slide 01
My name is _______ and this is a presentation about the need to have nursing informatics leading to quality outcomes by applying the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Practice.
Slide 02
This presentation is aimed at the discussion of the implementation of the use of an EHR system instead of paper records in our long-term care facility. Nursing informatics utilizes technology to help make better decisions on behalf of the patients and improve their outcomes (Kleib et al., 2021). An EHR system will result in more accurate information, allow doctors to coordinate the care better, and allow the records of patients to be easily accessed in real time.
As the new nurse informaticist at the long-term care facility, I will present an explanation of how EHRs and the ANA Standards of Practice can be used to improve the lives of patients, make the process of documentation easier, facilitate communication, and support the process of making data-driven decisions.
Slide 03: Best Evidence and Practices in Application of ICT
Healthcare makes use of ICT tools and systems to aid in the collection, management, sharing, and processing of patient information. ICTs have eased the communication process, accessibility of information, and the process of decision-making by nurses in their practice. These technologies aid in care coordination, timely documentation, minimizing medication errors, and allowing real-time information sharing among interprofessional teams. A recent study by Shahmoradi et al. (2021) emphasized the role of EHRs and CDSS tools implementation in enhancing care planning, accuracy in documentation, and compliance with evidence-based protocols, which eventually leads to improved patient outcomes and decreased hospital readmission rates.
CDSS sends clinicians important notices and beneficial suggestions, so that they can follow best practices and decrease the chances of errors with prescriptions. Barcode-based systems to identify patients and their medications have decreased the possibility of administering the wrong drug to patients (Upadhyay & Hu, 2022). Besides, ANA supports the use of informatics to facilitate patient-centered care, to which nurses must be familiar with how to use the tools that facilitate the efficiency, safety, and ethical care.
Slide 04:
Benefits and Challenges of ICT
ICT applications in health care are used to enhance a variety of care. The main benefits are the decreased risk of patient care, enhanced collaboration between the members of different health teams, and evidence-based decision-making. As an example, patient data in real-time can be accessed and monitored by medical personnel to use the EHR and avoid mistakes. The communication between the health team members helps them to keep the care plan of the patient, and no duplication of counseling occurs (Tawfik et al., 2021). Moreover, data analytics used in these systems can assist organizations in recognizing trends in patient care to enable doctors to respond.
On the other hand, introduction of ICT has some challenges. Acquisition, upgrading and maintenance of technologies can be costly, and this can be a financial burden to a medical facility. Privacy and data security are quite significant as well, particularly with the increase in the number of cyber threats and breaches of the safeguarded health information (PHI). In order to ensure the safety of patient data, there is a need to adhere to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other regulations (Edemekong et al., 2024). Also, employees may face challenges because of their ignorance of how to use online tools, or they feel uncomfortable with technology.
However, the academic literature notes that when well designed and implemented, ICTs not only enable nurses to be more efficient and commit less error but also to make informed clinical decisions (Nagy et al., 2023). When looking at the introduction of ICT systems in an organization, the strengths and weaknesses of the introduction of the systems have to be assessed.
Slide 05:
Theoretical Framework: Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)
In particular, the beneficial role of EHRs in patient safety and easing work, the simplicity and ease of the interface may be discussed during training courses. The TAM offers a summary of the change process by the nurses as they gear up to abandon the use of paper to record in long-term care and switch to electronic records. A nurse will be more eager to use an EHR when they are confident that it will help them save some time, increase accuracy, and help them communicate, and when the EHR is user-friendly and supported (Zhang et al., 2023). TAM helps organizations to solve problems, provides positive feedback, and makes it more likely that their EHR use can be successful.
Slide 06:
Real-World Application of TAM
Practically, TAM emphasizes the role of early adopters and opinion leaders to influence peers to adopt EHRs and the necessity of ongoing communication and feedback during the process. The adoption of the EHR technology by nurses in Taiwanese hospitals was measured by the team of Kuo et al. (2019) using the TAM. The authors observed that nurses who believed that the EHR system was efficient and simple to use were more likely to use it (Bramo et al., 2022). This has led to improved documentation, and satisfaction of nurses with the system.
Slide 07:
Standardized Data Collection in Nursing Practice
The standard data set will be critical in advancing nursing practice because it will come up with a common vocabulary that will enable the documentation, measurement, and analysis of the care given to patients in any environment in a similar way. In nursing care, standard data collection is based on using the same terminologies, such as NANDA International diagnoses, SNOMED CT, and the Omaha System. Medical information and results can be documented in the same way anywhere with these languages.
Patient records transfer is made easier because of such a continuous sharing of information. It allows organizations to check information, analyze it, and use scientific studies in making decisions. Alshammari et al. (2023) state that standardized data can help to more accurately assess the nursing-sensitive outcomes, which is focused on the direct impact nursing can have on patient safety and quality of care.
It is also advantageous to health programs of the population, as it provides the opportunity to examine in detail the impact of nurses on health outcomes (Su, 2021). In addition, standard data can be leveraged to promote healthcare by quality initiatives and help organizations to measure their performance. As soon as the data is the same and can be compared, the healthcare leaders can analyze the results and see where the care is inadequate and take measures to address the issue. As an example, having standardized data in nursing permits the measurement of the effectiveness of fall prevention programs and pressure injury treatment.
Slide 08:
Addressing Gaps in Practice Quality with Informatics
The role of nursing informatics standards of practice is critical to detecting and filling gaps in the quality of care through the use of data-driven solutions like EHR systems and CDSS tools. These systems combine patient data and evidence-based rules to give real-time alerts, reminders, and suggestions to enable clinicians to make well-informed decisions and minimize errors. As an example, CDSS can raise red flags on any potential interaction of the drug, or timely assessment of the pressure injury prevention that directly addresses the care delivery gaps. According to a study conducted by Zhao et al. (2023), the implementation of CDSS in hospitals started to have a considerable effect on the rise in the percentage of adherence to best practices, a reduction in adverse events due to providing specific and actionable insights at the point of care.
Continuous quality monitoring and the ability to monitor the outcomes and modify the interventions ahead of time by using data analytics dashboard offered by informatics tools also contribute to bridging the gaps in practice and delivering quality care and safety. Clinicians can be helped to prevent problems and respond timely with the help of EHR-based alerts and live data dashboards. Clinical alerts will assist nurses to prevent patient injuries in case a patient appears to be in danger of falling or in the event that some critical laboratory values are detected. Data dashboards help nursing leadership track various metrics, such as readmission rates, mishandled drugs, and infections (Su, 2021). Under predictive analytics, the doctor can anticipate the problems of the patient using information obtained about the patient, in the past and the present.
Slide 09:
Reducing Digital Inequities
Digital inequities need to be minimized to allow every person in the hospital to utilize electronic health systems to the fullest. Age, lack of experience with technology, lack of knowledge of the English language, issues with the device or the internet are common issues in schools. Some might find it challenging to use the complicated interfaces, or they might not have trustworthy internet access, which will complicate engaging in digital health programs and increase health inequities (Kefi & Asan, 2021).
An example is health companies that have implemented programs to make their employees more tech savvy, implemented multilingual capabilities on systems, and provided support services such as mentoring or help desks. Delivering training and programs to communities on the use of healthcare technology was found to be very effective in enhancing the uptake of health IT both by patients and providers, as demonstrated by Sieck et al. (2021). Further, the improvement of services to underserved groups can be done through infrastructure investment, such as community Wi-Fi hotspots, and loaner devices.
Slide 10:
Best Practices for Communication with ICT
The most effective practices of utilizing innovative information and communication technologies (ICT) in communication with patients and teams revolve around user-friendly and interoperable interfaces, real-time information sharing, and communication. The use of ICT to share information is needed to enhance patient care coordination and outcomes.
Integrating secure messaging with patient online accounts and platform of different medical professionals will guarantee efficient, clear, and standard communication between employees. It is also necessary to create norms in the sphere of communication and ensure that all changes in the plan of care are issued and delivered in real-time so that all members of the staff could be informed about patients and what needs to be done (Qaddumi et al., 2021). This results in the team operating more efficiently as it removes delays, uncertainties and generates accountability.
Moreover, using the patient portal, people will be able to access their health records, interact with their doctors, and implement actions that will improve their treatment. ICT tools were used in hospitals and were able to provide better interaction between the employees and were also welcomed by the patients (Qaddumi et al., 2021). The effective use of various tools, such as secure messaging systems, telehealth, and shared EHR, will support effective communication among the members of the care team and enable patients to be more active by providing them access to health information and direct communication options. The technologies enhance the coordination of care by helping teams to work more effectively, decrease errors with more accurate information, and tailor care plans with more recent data.
Slide 11:
Data, Information, and Plan Transmission Strategy
The adoption of an EHR system should also be planned to ensure that all the data, information and care plans are moved in the most appropriate and secure way possible. In this strategy, the members of staff are provided with step-wise training to enable them to provide information that is free of mistakes and which meets set standards. All the departments including the nursing department, pharmacy, and administration, among others, should also have similar processes to maintain the same level of consistency and not have the same process repeated.
The team members will be provided with set practices on documentation to improve their skills. Nurses, doctors, nurse administrators, IT professionals, administrators, and compliance officers are some of the people involved in this process (Dong et al., 2021). The EHR will be encrypted, need to be authenticated by relevant users, have a role-based access control, and provide data audit reports. The EHR should include regular audits and tools to detect and identify errors in real-time to ensure data integrity. They assist the system to adhere to HIPAA regulations, and even forestall any unauthorized effort to get information.
Slide 12:
Conclusion
Altogether, nursing informatics enhances patient care, connecting clinical activities and technologies. An EHR system will enhance care quality, make the communication process efficient, and provide physicians with more information to make an informed decision. To ensure that a school succeeds, the staff has to interact, be well-trained, and coordinate with all the other functions. Using theoretical frameworks such as the TAM, tackling disparities in digital access, and meeting stringent quality criteria of data accuracy, protection, and evidence-based clinical, healthcare organizations will be able to address the pitfalls hindering their progress and achieve the ultimate advantages of informatics.
